The Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale was formed in 1974 from the town and County Borough of Rochdale (including the town of Castleton) together with the Lancashire Municipal Boroughs of Heywood and Middleton, and the Urban Districts of Littleborough, Milnrow and Wardle. Some suburbs of the borough are, to the north: Shawclough, Healey, Dearnley and Calderbrook. I have also included in this section, for geographical convenience, the town of Whitworth, just in the adjacent borough of Rossendale, Lancashire. To the west: Cutgate, Norden, Spotland and the delightfully named Top of Heap. To the south and east: Sudden, Balderstone and Newhey
