The Metropolitan Borough of Tameside was formed in 1974 from the Municipal Boroughs of Ashton-under-Lyne, Dukinfield , Hyde, Mossley and Stalybridge, together with the Urban Districts of Audenshaw, Denton, Droylsden and Longdendale.  Some suburbs and villages to the north of the borough are Park Bridge, Hartshead, Waterloo and Taunton. To the west: Ashton Moss, Fairfield and Guide Bridge. To the south: Gee Cross, Hattersley, Godley, Newton, Broadbottom and Mottram-in-Longdendale and to the east: Heyrod, Micklehurst and Millbrook.
