The City of Salford Metropolitan Borough was formed in 1974 from the former City & County Borough of Salford, the Municipal Boroughs of Eccles and Swinton & Pendlebury and the Urban Districts of Irlam and Worsley (the latter including the towns of Walkden and Little Hulton). Some suburbs of the borough are, to the west: Ordsall, Weaste, Langworthy, Ellenbrook, Monton Green, Patricroft and Barton upon Irwell. To the north: Broughton, Kersal, Pendleton, Wallness, Irlams o’th Height and Clifton.
